WHO WE ARE

We are two educators passionate about teaching critical thinking skills through the fun and accessible medium of film. With more than twenty years of combined experience teaching film and critical thinking courses at the University level, we have identified two main knowledge gaps:

First, even though the value of critical thinking is widely recognised, undergraduates lack the precise knowledge on how to apply critical thinking skills properly to form effective arguments. Second, undergraduates have the misconception that films are merely a passive form of entertainment, rather than a cultural text that can and ought to be examined critically to enrich their worldviews.

We are therefore keen on bridging these knowledge gaps at the earlier stages of a youth’s intellectual development by reaching out to pre-university students. Through film engagement and analysis, we seek to enhance and motivate students’ independent learning abilities and higher-order thinking.

WHAT WE DO

At subtxt, our mission is to promote self-directed learning and create social awareness through the arts. Film is chosen as the core artistic medium through which students will be exposed to socio-political issues. They will not only learn how to use filmic texts as a source of evidence to examine and interpret past and present socio-political issues, but also how to articulate these issues through effectively constructed arguments.

Ultimately, we aim to demystify the concept of “critical thinking” by guiding students through a tangible and systematic approach to critical evaluation, thereby empowering them in being independent thinkers.

As independent researchers and the content creators of subtxt, we have designed various up-to-date, in-house film packages catered to pre-university students. We are also able to customise our content to better align with specific topics in the school syllabus.
